Michael studied law at Downing College, Cambridge and then qualified as a solicitor and practised corporate law at Slaughter & May as a trainee solicitor. He spent 20 years at FTSE 100 conglomerate The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). Roles at P&O included Group Company Secretary, Group Commercial & Legal Director (twice nominated as one of the leading five lawyers in business in the UK), member of the Main Board for 8 years, Chairman P&O Estates, Chief Executive London Gateway (a £1.5 billion infrastructure project to create Europe’s largest business park and one of its largest ports) , and Chairman of the La Manga Club resort, Spain.
Since leaving P&O following its takeover by Dubai Ports World, he has been NED and Remuneration Committee Chair of Grosvenor Limited (a major UK real estate company), Senior Independent Director and Remuneration Committee Chair of Modern Water plc (an AIM-listed developer of new technologies for the water industry), 15 years on the Board of The All England Lawn Tennis Club and Wimbledon Championships, the world’s premier tennis club/tournament serving as Chair of Committees with oversight of global TV rights, retailing, licensing, digital, Official Suppliers (sponsors) , hospitality, finance, risk and HR, and NED and Compensation Committee Chair of Genesis Lease (a NYSE-listed aircraft leasing company).
Currently He is a Non-executive Director of Aercap Holdings NV, the world’s largest owner of passenger aircraft owner and largest aircraft leasing company with assets of about US$40 billion, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Non-executive director of Exclusive Hotels, a family owned collection of UK country house hotels including Pennyhill Park Hotel, base of the England rugby team, and Co-founder/CEO of Game4Padel aiming to be the UK market leader of padel tennis, the world’s fastest growing racket sport. He represented Cambridge University in tennis and real tennis and Northamptonshire in tennis.
